Aussie Stories - telling about Australia in words and pictures

Joe Mortelliti's life long love, from when he was first given a Brownie camera as a boy, was photography. It was the focus of his work life for many years. He loved to travel with his wife Marion to as many parts of Australia as he could. He had the ability to 'see' the beauty of our land in such a way that he could photograph it for the delight of others. These photos are a legacy that he has left us. Used by permission and with appreciation.

Maddern's Hill, near Clarke's Hill, near Ballarat, Victoria, Australia
Maddern's Hill, near Clarke's Hill, near Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. A beautiful farming landscape. While photographing over a 3 day period I noted cars with interstate number plates who toured this area. Located in the Clarke’s Hill district 11 km from Ballarat. This area is being proposed for wind farm development. The Bracks government seems happy to industrialise many of our rural landscapes which are particularly beautiful. December 2004.

I don't know whether this wind farm development has gone ahead. I do know that some distance to the east of this area several windfarms have been established. One or two windmills may look elegant, but bunches of them just look like an industrial site. Given the inefficiency of wind farms in achieving a real power generation improvement it would seem a pity to compromise the beauty of this area with wind farms.

Gateway to Clarke's Hill, near Ballarat, Victoria, Australia
Gateway to Clarke's Hill, near Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. Stormy weather darkens the sky and softens the light, enabling me to capture a soft moody image. A few seconds later the storm cloud passed and out came the sun. I took another shot of same scene, but the contrast three quarter backlight to same scene looked very harsh. December 2004

Waurbra farm lands, Victoria, Australia
Waurbra farm lands, Victoria, Australia. This is another rural area where the Bracks government has plans to develop wind farms. In the background is Big Hill, and the local school will be in very close proximity to the turbines on this hill. The local community are very concerned about where these turbines are planned to be located, especially as reports clearly indicate wind generation simply does not work effectively. January 2005
